The U.S. Department of State has announced the results of the 2022 Diversity Visa lottery program.
The program, also known as the green card lottery, allows 55,000 randomly selected people to obtain permanent residency in the United States. Winners of the lottery come from countries that typically do not send many immigrants to the United States. The program was developed under the Immigration Act of 1990 as a way to diversify the immigrant population of the country.
The visa lottery allows people and families who otherwise would not have a legal path to immigration to obtain a green card.
More than 13 million people around the world applied for the green card lottery last year, including applicants and their family members. The application period ran for 35 days, from Oct. 7, 2020 to Nov. 10, 2020. The winners were chosen via a randomized drawing within six geographic regions.
“No one country can receive more than seven percent of the available diversity visas in any one year,” the State Department said in their July visa bulletin.
The following is a list of the top ten countries with winners selected in the visa lottery:
- Egypt – 6,005 visas
- Sudan – 6,001 visas
- Russia – 6,001 visas
- Algeria – 6,001 visas
- Uzbekistan – 6,001 visas
- Iran – 5,739 visas
- Ukraine – 4,949 visas
- Morocco – 4,138 visas
- Nepal – 3,802 visas
- Democratic Republic of the Congo – 3,347 visas
Applicants are eligible for the Diversity Visa if their country of origin has sent fewer than 5,000 immigrants to the United States in the last 5 years. The list of eligible countries varies from year to year depending on immigration statistics. For example, natives born in Brazil, Canada, South Korea, and the United Kingdom were not eligible for the 2022 visa lottery.
Those eligible must also possess at least a high school degree or have at least two years of work experience in a profession that requires at least two years of training.
Once accepted, winners of the green card lottery follow the same admission requirements as other green card applicants in the United States.
Those selected for the 2022 lottery are invited to apply for an immigrant visa during the next government fiscal year, from Oct. 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, 2022. DOS said in their visa bulletin that winners should act quickly, as numbers of visas could be exhausted by the end of the fiscal year. Applicants are also encouraged to follow the instructions on their notification letter to completely fill out the information needed.
The State Department said in their August visa bulletin that the 2023 Diversity Visa lottery will be widely publicized within the upcoming months. Those interested in the 2023 visa lottery should continue to check the visa website for registration dates.
